    Theresa Gattung

    Chair and Independent Non-Executive Director

    Theresa Gattung

    Appointed as an independent Director of AIA Australia in May 2009, Theresa was appointed Chair of the Board in March 2010.

    Theresa also became Independent Director and Chair of Sovereign’s Board of Directors in July 2018. She is also a Member of Sovereign’s Board Committees.

    Theresa is the co-founder of the very successful start-up My Food Bag. From October 1999 to June 2007, Theresa was the CEO and Managing Director of Telecom New Zealand, where she led the company through world-changing technology developments. 

    In 2015 Theresa was made a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to business and philanthropy and was inducted into the TVNZ New Zealand Marketing Hall of Fame. Theresa is involved with a number of not-for-profit and philanthropic interests, including being co-founder and trustee of the World Women Charitable Trust and Patron of the Cambodia Charitable Trust.

    Peter Yates AM

    Peter Yates

    Peter is Deputy Chair of AIA Australia Limited and Chair of Colonial Mutual Life Assurance Society Limited, a Director of Linfox Australia Pty Ltd and Mutual Trust Pty Ltd. He is Chairman of the Royal Institution of Australia, the Australian Science Media Centre, the Faculty of Business and Economics at Melbourne University, the Royal Children’s Hospital Foundation, the Shared Value Project and the NHMRC Centre for Personalised Immunology at ANU and the Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for Quantum Computation and Communication Technology at UNSW.

    From 2004-2007 Peter was Managing Director of Oceania Capital Partners and held the position of Chief Executive Officer of Publishing and Broadcasting Limited from 2001-2004. Until 2001, he worked in the Investment Banking industry including 15 years with Macquarie Bank. He holds a Doctorate of the University from Murdoch University, a Masters degree from Stanford University Graduate School of Business and a Commerce degree from University of Melbourne. He speaks Japanese, having studied at Keio University in Tokyo.

    Until 30 June 2019, Peter was Deputy Chairman of The Myer Family Investments Ltd. He has been a Director of the Royal Children’s Hospital and the Australian Chamber Orchestra, Asialink, Publishing and Broadcasting, Crown Ltd, Foxtel Ltd, The Nine Network, Ninemsn, Ticketek, Veda Ltd, Oceania Capital Partners Ltd, the National Portrait Gallery, The Melbourne International Arts Festival, Centre for Independent Studies, MOKO.mobi and the Australia-Japan Foundation.

    In the June 2011 Queen’s Birthday Honours, Peter was awarded a Member of the Order of Australia for service to education, to the financial services industry and to a range of arts, science and charitable organisations and in 2017 was made a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technology and Engineering (ATSE). He has also recently been awarded the Australian Academy of Science Medal for 2019.

    Elizabeth Flynn

    Independent Non-Executive Director

    Elizabeth Flynn was appointed as an independent Director of AIA Australia on 22 February 2011 and is a member of AIA Australia’s Board Audit, Risk & Compliance Committees and in August 2018 was appointed Chair of the Board Remuneration Committee. In addition to her role on the AIA Australia Board, Elizabeth is currently a non-executive Director of IOOF Holdings Limited and several IOOF subsidiaries and chair of IOOF’s Risk & Compliance Committee and a Victorian Government appointed member of the Emergency Services Superannuation Board and chair of its Governance, Risk & Compliance Committee. Elizabeth is also the Company Secretary of Save the Children Australia. In July 2018, AIA completed its acquisition of Sovereign Assurance Company Limited (Sovereign), and Elizabeth was appointed an Independent Director on Sovereign’s Board and Board Committees.

    Elizabeth held several roles at Aviva Australia during the period 1998 - 2010, including Chief Legal Counsel, Group Company Secretary and Group Compliance Manager. She was appointed to the company’s Executive Team in 2004.

    Prior to joining Aviva Australia, Elizabeth spent 18 years at Minter Ellison, one of the largest law firms in Australia, where she practiced as a commercial lawyer with special expertise in the areas of superannuation, securitisation and collective investments.

    Elizabeth is a fellow of the AICD, FINSIA, the Institute of Chartered Secretaries & Administrators and the Governance Institute of Australia.

    Sue Dahn

    Sue Dahn

    Independent Non-Executive Director

    Sue Dahn was appointed as an independent director of AIA Australia in October 2018, and is the chair of the Board Audit Committee. In addition to her role on the AIA Australia Board, Sue is currently a Partner at Pitcher Partners Melbourne, a director and chair of the investment committee of MTAA Super Fund, and a director of Victorian Traditional Owners Funds Limited. She is also a member of the Victorian Judicial Commission community panel, a Victorian Council Member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors, and an independent investment expert to Trinity College on its Investment Committee.

    Sue has previously held non-executive director roles with McMillan Shakespeare Ltd, the Australian Communities Foundation, AGEST Super Fund, Emergency Services and State Super Fund and Shrine of Remembrance. She has held senior financial advisory positions with the Department of Treasury and Finance, Department of Premier and Cabinet as well as with the Department of Industry and the Office of the Auditor-General.

    Sue has a Masters of Business Administration and Commerce degree from University of Melbourne, a Graduate Diploma of Applied Finance and Investment and a Company Directors Diploma. Sue is a fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors, Finsia, CPA Australia, the Australian Super Funds Association and the Australian Institute of Super Trustees. She is also a fellow of the Winston Churchill Memorial Trust and alumni of Leadership Victoria.

    Chief Executive Officer (Australia and New Zealand) and Director

    M. Damien Mu

    Damien Mu has more than 20 years’ experience in the Australian financial services industry, with management experience spanning operations, claims and underwriting, superannuation, investments, distribution, product, pricing and marketing.

    Damien’s career at AIA Australia began in April 2007. Over that time he has held various roles, including Head of Group Insurance, Chief Distribution and Marketing Officer and General Manager - Life Insurance.

    On 1 August 2014, Damien was appointed to the role of Chief Executive Officer. In 2014 the company launched AIA Vitality, a world leading health and wellness program, to the Australian market. New Zealand was added to his responsibilities in July 2016 and in July 2017 AIA and its partners launched myOwn Health, a new health insurance business. In September 2017, AIA announced the acquisition of the Colonial Mutual Life Assurance Society Limited and a strategic bancassurance arrangement with the Commonwealth Bank of Australia, subject to regulatory approvals. In July 2018, AIA completed its acquisition of Sovereign Assurance Company Limited (now AIA New Zealand), and entered into a strategic bancassurance arrangement with ASB Bank, in New Zealand.

    Damien is a director of AIA New Zealand, MO Health Pty Ltd, the Financial Services Council (FSC), Co-Chair of the Life Board Committee and Advisory Board member of the Shared Value Project.

    Bill Lisle

    Regional Chief Executive and Director

    Bill Lisle

    Bill Lisle is the Regional Chief Executive responsible for AIA Group’s businesses operating in Thailand, Korea, Australia, New Zealand, India and Sri Lanka as well as Group Partnership Distribution.

    Bill was Chief Executive Officer of AIA’s operation in Malaysia from December 2012 to May 2015 including leading the large-scale and successful integration of ING Malaysia after its acquisition by AIA Group in 2012. He is a director of various companies within AIA Group including AIA Company Limited, AIA Australia Limited and Sovereign Assurance Company Limited. He is also a director of Tata AIA Life Insurance Company Limited, a joint venture between AIA Group and Tata Sons Limited in India. Bill joined AIA Group in January 2011 as Group Chief Distribution Officer.

    Prior to joining AIA Group, Bill was the Managing Director, South Asia for Aviva from May 2009 until 2010. Prior to joining Aviva, Bill held a number of senior positions at Prudential Corporation Asia Limited, including Chief Executive Officer in Malaysia from 2008 to 2009, Chief Executive Officer in Korea from 2005 to 2008, Chief Agency Officer for ICICI Prudential from 2002 to 2004 and Director of Agency Development, South Asia in 2001.

    Stuart A. Spencer

    Stuart Spencer

    Stuart is a member of the Group Executive of AIA Group Ltd, responsible for the Group’s marketing initiatives, customer propositions and AIA Vitality. He is a director of various companies within the Group. Stuart re-joined AIA in May 2017 from Zurich Insurance Group, where he was most recently the interim CEO, Asia Pacific. Prior to that he was Chief Executive Officer, General Insurance, Asia Pacific for Zurich Insurance from 2013 to 2016. Stuart was with the American International Group from 1996 to 2009, during which time he held a number of senior positions including leading their Accident & Health General Insurance operations in Latin America and the Caribbean and President – Accident and Health Worldwide. Stuart was also the Global Head and COO, Worldwide Life, Accident & Health, for Chubb Insurance. He is an alumnus of the Harvard Business School, The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy and Brandeis University.

    DAMIEN MU

    Chief Executive Officer (Australia and New Zealand) and Director

    Damien Mu

    Damien Mu has more than 20 years’ experience in the Australian financial services industry, with management experience spanning operations, claims and underwriting, superannuation, investments, distribution, product, pricing and marketing.

    Damien is married to Simone and has two children, Bailey and Kai. He is passionate about people and leading an organisation whose purpose is “Making a Difference in People’s Lives”.

    Damien is a director of AIA New Zealand, AIA Australia, MO Health Pty Ltd, the Financial Services Council (FSC), Co-Chair of the Life Board Committee and Advisory Board member of the Shared Value Project. 

    Wanda Britton

    Chief Operations Officer, AIA Australia

    Wanda Britton

    Wanda joined AIA Australia in August 2019 as Head of Enterprise Optimisation, stepping up as Chief Operations Officer in March 2020.

    Wanda brings with her more than 20 years of executive experience, predominantly within the financial services industry. Prior to joining AIA, Wanda held executive roles at Suncorp, before spending 11 years at Sunsuper where she led strategy development and execution, portfolio and project management, and operational servicing excellence. As Head of Enterprise Change at Sunsuper, she led the due diligence and subsequent delivery of two large mergers into Sunsuper, bringing in over 370,000 new members and $6.4 billion in funds under management.

    Wanda is passionate about building and leading high performing teams through leading, mentoring and developing talent across the organisation. 

    Michael Chernov

    Chief Financial Officer

    Michael Chernov

    Michael Chernov is a qualified actuary with over 18 years of experience in the life insurance industry in both Australia and the United Kingdom.

    He joined AIA Australia in 2009, working initially in the Actuarial department and then reporting to the Chief Actuary, with responsibilities including developing existing Executive and Board management reporting, group insurance reporting and analysis, as well as special projects.

    In 2010, Michael moved to the Finance team to head up the newly created Business Analysis team, which included responsibility for management reporting, budgeting and forecasting, as well as creating a new Finance Business Partner function.

    In 2014, Michael moved into the role of Head of Strategy and Business Analytics, where he was responsible for corporate strategy and operating rhythm; strategic insights including researching emerging market trends; enterprise initiatives such as health, banca and shared value; and performance reporting & analytics for IFA, Group and AIA Vitality.

    In March 2017, Michael was appointed Chief Financial Officer for AIA Australia & New Zealand.

    Prior to joining AIA Australia, Michael gained experience in both consulting and reinsurance with roles at Munich Re (UK), Deloitte (UK and Australia) and Trowbridge Consulting (Australia).

    Skye Crawford

    Chief People & Culture Officer

    Skye Crawford

    Joining AIA Australia in September 2020, Skye is an established Human Resources Executive with over 20 years of experience across a diverse number of industries including Financial Services, Professional Services, Mining and Consumer Services.   

    With a career focussed on driving change in complex organisations, and in particular the delivery of various joint ventures, mergers, acquisitions and the resulting integrations, Skye has a passion for building sustainable businesses where people can thrive. With this in mind, Skye also has a strong commitment to coaching other leaders and executives so that they in turn positively impact the people and organisations they lead.

    Previous to AIA, Skye led HR for all customer segments at Australia Post, supporting a significant transformation in the organisation’s go-to-market model. Previous to Australia Post, Skye spent a number of years working internationally with Rio Tinto in HR roles predominantly focussed on organisational change and talent management. Skye has also held senior HR roles with Incitec Pivot, Telstra (Sensis), and Ernst & Young.

    Skye holds an Executive MBA from Melbourne Business School, a Bachelor of Business (QUT) and is a Graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

    Harry Efthimiou

    Chief Integration Officer, AIA Australia & New Zealand

    Harry Efthimiou

    Harry Efthimiou joined AIA Australia as Chief Finance Officer in 2010 and was appointed Chief Finance & Strategy Officer in 2014. In 2016, he became the Chief Health Insurance Officer to identify and execute business opportunities for AIA in the health insurance area. Harry moved into the role of Chief Integration Officer in July 2018.  

    Prior to joining AIA, Harry spent eight years with Aviva in a range of roles including General Manager Financial Management & Risk, Head of Mergers & Acquisitions for Aviva PLC in the UK and Head of Aviva Finance Integration, following the takeover of Aviva by MLC/NAB Wealth.

    Harry commenced his career working with KPMG in Scotland and after moving to Australia with KPMG, he joined Ansett Australia as Group Finance Manager. He holds a Bachelor of Accountancy Honours Degree from Glasgow University in Scotland and is a member of The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland.

    John Lane

    Chief Technology Officer

    John Lane

    John joined AIA Australia as Chief Technology Officer in November 2019, bringing with him more than 20 years of deep experience across Insurance, Banking and Superannuation.

    Prior to joining AIA, John was General Manager of Commonwealth Bank’s CommInsure, Colonial First State (CFS) and Advice businesses. 

    Before joining CBA, John spent a total of 16 years at Suncorp, with his last three years as Executive General Manager (CIO) at Suncorp Bank. In this role, John had executive responsibility for all operational aspects of the Bank IT.

    John is passionate about modernising IT delivery practices and is a keen advocate for the accelerated uptake of digital transformation.

    His core philosophy is to maximise the transformational impact of technology by constantly challenging the status quo and pushing the boundaries, providing an environment for talent, development and innovation to thrive.

    Danny shuttleworth

    Chief Strategy Officer and CEO Office

    Danny Shuttleworth

    Danny joined AIA as Chief Actuary in March 2013 and has more recently also added the Chief Strategy Officer responsibilities. He has over 30 years’ experience in the Australian finance and insurance industry in a wide range of roles in both the corporate and consulting sectors.

    Prior to joining AIA, Danny was the Deputy Group Actuary and Appointed Actuary NMLA at AXA APH/ AMP.

    Danny has also held Appointed Actuary roles with Norwich Union Life and Australian Eagle Insurance. He has also worked at MLC/National Australia Bank, PwC and Tillinghast Towers Perrin.

    Danny is a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries of Australia.

    RENAE SMITH

    Chief Customer Officer, AIA Australia

    Renae Smith

    As Chief Customer Officer, Renae is driving the customer agenda aligning purpose, profit and impact to deliver shared value outcomes for customers, partners and AIA. 

    Embedding customer-focus at the heart of everything we do, Renae is leading the customer strategy, experience, propositions, channels and service including digital and contact centres. She is also responsible for customer governance including risk, complaints and remediation. 

    Renae has diverse experience developed in executive and functional roles in the insurance, financial services, telecommunications and technology sectors. This has included commercial and functional responsibility for Brand & Marketing, Product & Pricing, CRM & Loyalty and Digital. Prior to joining AIA, Renae held key leadership roles at GE Capital and Telstra following an early career in entrepreneurial start-ups.

    Renae is married with two children. Renae’s alignment with AIA’s purpose, to Make a Difference in people's lives, extends to her personal life through her passion for supporting the livelihoods and education of less fortunate children in East Timor and Africa.

    NICK STANHOPE

    Chief Executive Officer, New Zealand

    Graeme Edwards

    As CEO New Zealand, Nick is proud to lead a passionate team of 900 people with the goal of making New Zealand one of the healthiest and most protected nations in the world.

    With 28 years of experience in the financial services sector, Nick has held a diverse range of senior leadership roles in New Zealand. Nick was most recently CEO of Sovereign for two years. Prior to this, Nick was the Executive General Manager of Wealth & Insurance at ASB Bank Limited. He has held a variety of key leadership roles within ASB including General Manager Corporate Banking and Working Capital Services, General Manager Business Banking and General Manager of Business Banking and Retail Specialist Services.

    Born and raised in Auckland, New Zealand, Nick is married with two daughters. Outside of work, he enjoys keeping active, is a keen cyclist and gym goer and has competed in triathlons and Ironman events.

    Mike Thornton

    Chief Risk Officer

    Mike Thornton

    As Chief Risk Officer, Mike is responsible for risk and compliance capabilities, and has 30 years’ experience in life insurance and wealth management, largely in the UK, Asia and Australasia.

    He has held a wide range of executive roles, including Group Chief Actuary and Chief Risk Officer roles. Prior to joining AIA in February 2016, Mike was the Group Chief Risk Officer at AMP, and prior to that, had a long career with the AXA Group.

    He is a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries in Australia and the UK, and is a Certified Experienced Risk Actuary.

    Michael Tropea

    General Counsel & Company Secretary

    Michael Tropea AIA Australia

    Michael has over 15 years’ experience in life insurance and financial services across the Asia Pacific.

    Michael was appointed General Counsel & Company Secretary in February 2012, with overall responsibility for the provision of legal and corporate secretarial services and advice to the Board of Directors and senior management in Australia and New Zealand.

    Michael joined AIA Australia in October 2010 as Associate General Counsel. Prior to joining AIA Australia, Michael was International VP & Asia Regional Counsel at New York Life’s regional headquarters in Hong Kong, and worked at law firms Baker & McKenzie and Allen & Overy in Hong Kong, and Mallesons Stephen Jaques in Sydney and Melbourne.  

    Michael is admitted to practice law in Victoria, New South Wales and Hong Kong. He has a Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) and Bachelor of Laws (Honours) from the University of Melbourne.  

    Ben Walsh

    Chief Insurance & Investments Officer, AIA Australia

    Ben Walsh

    Ben Walsh joined AIA Australia as Chief Life Insurance Officer in June 2020.

    This role was broadened in November 2020 to include responsibility for AIA’s Savings & Investment business and in December 2020 to include responsibility for AIA’s Health business.

    Prior to joining AIA, Ben worked for Mercer and its sister company Marsh for more than 25 years. He was the Managing Director and CEO of Mercer in Pacific, where he was responsible for delivering the firm’s business segments of Health, Wealth and Career. Ben was also the Australian Chief Country Officer of Mercer’s parent, the global professional services firm Marsh & McLennan Companies (MMC) and a Director of seven Mercer Boards across Australia & New Zealand, including the Trustee of the AU$25 billion in funds under management Mercer Master Trust.

    Ben was appointed to the Faculty of Business & Economics Advisory Board with The University of Melbourne in 2015, the Board of World Bicycle Relief (Australia) in 2019, and also served on the Board of the Financial Services Council from 2018-2020. He holds a Bachelor of Commerce with Honors from the University of Melbourne, and a Master of Business Administration from the Melbourne Business School.
